NiMet Forecasts Three-Day Thunderstorms and Rainfall Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday to Wednesday, issuing advisories to mitigate potential hazards as the rainy season persists.

In its weather outlook released Sunday, NiMet forecasts isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains on Monday morning in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states, with flash floods likely in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe. Afternoon and evening hours will see similar conditions across the northern region.

In the central region, a cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals and moderate rainfall is expected over Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Benue in the morning, escalating to thunderstorms later. The southern region will experience cloudy skies with moderate rains in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states, spreading across most areas by evening.

On Tuesday, the northern region will have cloudy skies with sunshine intervals, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains in Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa in the morning, extending to Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba later.

The central region will see cloudy skies with sunshine intervals and moderate rains in Kogi, Niger, FCT, Kwara, and Nasarawa in the morning, with thunderstorms forecast over Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and FCT in the afternoon.

The southern region anticipates cloudy skies with moderate rains in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta states, followed by light to moderate rains later.

Wednesday will bring cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the north, with slim chances of thunderstorms and light rain in Sokoto and Zamfara, escalating to isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto. The central region will have cloudy skies with light rains in FCT, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger in the morning, with thunderstorms expected in Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger later. The southern region will see cloudy skies with moderate rains by evening.

NiMet advises motorists to avoid driving during heavy downpours, farmers to refrain from applying fertilizers or pesticides before rain to prevent nutrient loss, and residents to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances, and avoid tall trees during storms. Airline operators are urged to consult airport-specific weather updates for planning.
